The Edge is a 40,000-square-foot office building, located in Amsterdam, occupied by the financial division of Deloitte. The project originally had two main goals: first to create a comfortable and healthy environment that is able to help people to be happy, satisfied and productive; and second create a building with an exceptional level of sustainability and space optimisation. The result is a radically innovative workplace in every aspect, from technology to people's experience and freedom to use spaces.
The Edge represents a new frontier in the use of technology for smart buildings. Specifically, the Edge is a world leading development in three key areas of the smart building movement: sustainability and resource optimisation, data collection and design, and comfort and effectiveness.
Sustainability and resource optimisation
The Edge won the BREEAM 2016 Sustainable Built Environmental Award for its high level of sustainability, resource reuse and low energy consumption.
The Edge has about 28,000 sensors distributed throughout the building which record information about the presence of people, light, temperature and carbon dioxide levels. The system monitors all facilities allowing optimisation and resource management as well as analysing people's interaction with the space. The system also facilitates the management of core services, such as cleaning.
Data collection and design
The sensor system distributed throughout the building allows the collection of data on the use of space. The ability to understand and quantify the use of space offers a
The building uses 70% less electricity than other comparable office buildings.
The Edge has the largest surface of photovoltaic panels of any other office building in Europe. It is equipped with a water-powered energy storage system providing all the energy needed for heating and cooling.
