features and mechanisms that could make the space in which we live more natural, addressing the notion that we have to “leave” our buildings to “enter” the natural world.
Looking at the “nature-design relationships” defined by Keller, Terrapin Bright Green looked at opportunities to apply them in architecture and design and developed a framework composed of 14 patterns8 which support making biophilic design decisions in every artificial space.
Recently, accurate medical and scientific studies in support of the “biophilia hypothesis” have been published by the German biologist Clemens Arvay9. In addition, biophilia has been connected to the wider concept of sustainable design by Rob Fleming and Saglinda Roberts10 who offered a holistic approach addressing the social, cultural, ecological, and aesthetic aspects of the connection between humans and nature.
Today biophilic principles are applied in a range of contexts, from the interiors of buildings to streets, cities and even whole regions11, with an approach that does not simply create healthy spaces but healing ones12.
Examples from all over the world show how biophilic design is now routinely applied to support everything from learning, movement and
