activities we need to perform in them. Rather than adapting a space to allow us work anywhere, we adapt the space – home, work or anywhere in between – to our needs, to our personal bubble.
The result is a kind of toolbox, a briefcase turned into a backpack, which accompanies us everywhere, packed with the digital and analogue objects we need every day – not least a bottle of water – that we have learnt to carry with us at all times. The things we consider indispensable, and which communicate to others so much about who we are and what we believe in.
This phenomenon has become even more pronounced since the pandemic, as our homes and urban spaces have been redefined as places in which we work.
The idea that there is a meaningful distinction between work and life – the notion that underpins talk of work/life balance – has been eroded. Being able to tailor our environment to our specific needs at any moment renders such a contrast irrelevant.
