A focus on happiness is the basis of Positive Psychology9, which represents an alternative approach to the previously dominant models that concentrated on negative experiences such as stress and depression.
This change of focus helps to nurture more positive behaviours, such as supporting colleagues, team building exercises, motivational activities and so represents a far more attractive proposition for organisations and workplaces.
Talking about happiness at work means we must consider issues that extend beyond the private and personal sphere. These include job satisfaction, personal engagement, dedication, enthusiasm, as well as organisational commitment, clear communication, efficient workflow, servant-leadership,10 continuous learning and the intelligent use of space and technology.
Given the important role of work in our life, the office becomes a key space in which to pursue happiness: not only because “healthy and happy employees tend to be more productive over the long run, generating better goods and more fulfilling services for their customers”11 but also because “health, happiness and productivity are the essential ingredients of a good society”12.
From a managerial point of view it is also essential to invest in the happiness of employees: “(...) practices involve redesigning work to be performed by autonomous teams, being highly selective in employment, offering job security, investing in training, sharing information and power with employees, adopting flat organization structures and rewarding based on organizational performance”13.
