happy and good life involves doing what is right and virtuous. It means growing, pursuing important or consistent goals, and using and developing one’s skills and talents, regardless of how one may actually feel at any point in time.”4
Scientists, on the other hand, have tried to explain what makes people happy and why some are happier than others. Research on twins claims that 50 percent of our propensity to be happy depends on our genes: this means that all of us have a personal disposition to be more or less happy at a particular point.
This “genetic set point” is at the base of many “top-down” models of wellbeing, which actually only explain just one aspect of why we are happy. The other part, the “bottom-up” model, refers to moments of happiness or the sum of positive experiences. More recent studies suggest that the remaining 50% of our ability to be happy depends on environmental factors (10%) or intentional happiness enhancing activities (40%).
WORKER HAPPINESS IS A BAROMETER OF ENTERPRISE HEALTH.
“The very good news is that, there is quite a number of internal circumstances (...) under your voluntary control. If you decide to change them your level of happiness is likely to increase lastingly”6. These activities can be more or less important depending on local cultural factors, but are considered to be related to kindness, gratitude, optimism, curiosity, playfulness, humour, open- mindedness and hope7. They are also linked to the pursuit of intrinsic goals such as personal growth and relationships more than extrinsic goals such as fame and power, and usually have the characteristic of being contagious, generating happiness in the people around us8.
