As contemporary work environments continue to evolve, the boundaries between focused work, social interaction and personal expression are increasingly fluid. With the se:café bar, Sedus addresses this shift by introducing a central meeting point that encourages exchange and informal interaction within the office. The bar combines the role of a social hub with a high degree of functional versatility. Whether configured as a freestanding island, a space-dividing element or a wall-oriented unit, the se:café bar brings people together and supports a wide range of activities.
“The idea behind the se:café bar was to create a place that goes beyond the concept of a conventional furniture solution,” explains Konstantin Thomas, industrial designer at Sedus. “The bar functions as a social interface that actively promotes communication, interaction and openness. As work environments become more fluid and more human-centred, spaces are needed that reflect and support this development.”
With the introduction of new tall units, the se:café bar is now complete as a fully developed product family. The additional modules enable larger configurations designed for more users and allow multiple functions—such as sinks, water treatment, cooling or waste management—to be combined within a single unit. The tall cabinets accommodate larger refrigerators or a microwave for heating food.
“Office environments must continuously adapt to changing requirements,” says Susanne Kipsiecker, Product Manager at Sedus. “Our products need to reflect this flexibility. With the se:café bar, this has been achieved through a modular concept and a self-supporting construction. The modules are not permanently connected to the building structure and can be relocated or reconfigured with relatively little effort.”
Beyond facilitating social interaction, the modules enhance the workplace with a residential atmosphere and well-considered functionality. A defining feature of the se:café bar is the functional rail integrated into the niche above the work surface. This rail can accommodate a range of practical accessories, including shelves, kitchen roll holders and storage trays. Frequently used items such as cups or cleaning utensils remain openly accessible, allowing the niche to be used intuitively and adapted flexibly to changing requirements even at a later stage.
The colours and finishes of the se:café bar are fully aligned with the broader Sedus portfolio, enabling a consistent and holistic design approach across contemporary work environments.
