Many organisations are asking themselves how they can create offices that are better for networking and collaboration. The office is no longer merely a place where people once simply worked side by side, but a place where they come to meet, exchange knowledge, and generate ideas.
“To attract people, offices now need to be both aesthetically and functionally appealing,” says Ernst Holzapfel, Marketing Director at Sedus Stoll AG. “Freedom in the workplace no longer just means which desk you choose. It now means how you use the whole working environment, how you spend your days, or how you tailor the day to your needs. Inspired by third places such as cafés, restaurants, hotel lobbies, libraries or parks, the features of the city are gradually finding their way into the office and encouraging companies to create attractive spaces that meet a wide variety of needs.”
While employees used to build their days around a fixed workstation either in the office or at home, third spaces are increasingly the focus of modern working culture. One type of space in particular stands out: the Work Café. The Work Café is a social space in which people can network, work together informally and find common ground. Inspired by the triumvirate “Work, Learn, Create”, it is now an integral part of many working environments. As part of Clerkenwell Design Week from 20 to 22 May 2025, Sedus is transforming its showroom into a Work Café and presenting new product solutions that offer an ideal mix of relaxation, variety and inspiration.
When organic design meets craftsmanship: the new se:café wooden chair and the new se:café lounge chair are sure to catch the eye with their timeless aesthetic. When it comes to the design of solid wood chairs, Sedus has a long history of leading expertise in solid-wood chair design. This tradition is characterised by its combination of craftsmanship and innovation, as explained by designer Konstantin Thomas. “The fusion of wood craftsmanship and modern design reflects the way we have balanced heritage with contemporary needs”, he says. “By making the conscious decision to incorporate functional elegance and clean lines, the chair reflects its roots in the Sedus tradition and its role in the modern world.”
By reinterpreting coffee house seating in this way, it was essential to focus on the chair’s function and intuitive design. “I wanted to create a chair that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical,” explains Thomas. “This means that the shape directly reflects the purpose of the chair while also offering a minimalist but well-thought-out design.”
The new se:café team table from Sedus forms the centrepiece of a Work Café – designed to promote both socialising and productivity within the office. Its striking, intuitive design and role at the heart of the office encourage people to interact. With a large surface spanningup to 4.800 mm, the table strengthens a sense of belonging and is the natural choice for impromptu meetings. Up to fourteen people can work at the table during the day, collaborating and sharing achievements then unwind with an after-work drink or dinner in the evening.
The natural feel of the elegant veneer finish emphasises the high-quality design of the table. Adaptable and flexible accessory options such as lights, planters and shelves can be attached using an integrated joint. The table also offers discreet electrical and data servicing with connections that are integrated into the table’s frame, allowing them to be positioned individually.
In addition to the new products, exciting speakers will once again shed light on current issues in workplace development this year. One highlight is the presentation ‘The Great Workplace Reset: Why People Will Want to Return” by Hannah Nardini, Workplace Strategist at WKspace on 20 May 2025 at 3 pm.
The workplace is undergoing a profound transformation, and what many once thought of as the "new normal" is now giving way to a resurgence of the traditional office. As businesses embrace hybrid and remote work models, employees are increasingly seeking a balance between flexibility and connection. The "Great Workplace Reset" marks a shift in how we view workspaces, with a renewed desire for in-person collaboration, culture-building, and a sense of community. But why will people want to return?
