What is the Sedus dorsokinetic mechanism?

What makes the dorsokinetic mechanism unique in the black dot is that the backrest is suspended at only one point by a flexible joint. Where other chairs remain rigid, the black dot is dynamic and supports the back even during twisting and lateral movements. One major advantage is that the swivel chair can be used intuitively, without any adjustment elements for the backrest joint. How does the system work?

The backrest is connected to the backrest support via an adapter plate. Clamped into this construction are two ‘sprung’ elements made of an elastic foam with a very high degree of resilience. This mechanism, therefore, always returns the backrest to its original position, even after a long period of use. The material of the sprung elements is also used in car chassis to prevent the suspension struts from hitting the body.

The backrest joint in the black dot works softly and silently. No maintenance is required, which offers further advantages for the user.

Ergonomic advantages of dorsokinetics

From an ergonomic point of view, the mechanism allows the user more movement in the back area. While the seat offers stability, the natural movement potential of the spine can be utilised.

The spine does not allow torsion or bending equally in all zones. For this reason, the angular movements of the dorsokinetic backrest have been limited to a reasonable extent: the backrest joint allows 8° to the right and left and up to 15° in a backwards direction. This ensures that no unhealthy movements are possible and, above all, that no feeling of insecurity arises. The balanced backrest joint also supports the synchronised movement of the chair mechanism and complements it harmoniously.
