Sculptural design, high seating comfort and a responsible selection of materials define the new se:cove lounge chair. A striking visual presence, the upholstered chair is ideally suited to focused individual work, creative pauses or extended conversations.
“In open-plan offices, se:cove fulfils a role that is becoming increasingly important,” explains Konstantin Thomas, Industrial Designer at Sedus. “The lounge chair creates a personal retreat that can be used spontaneously and functions entirely without technical aids. Its enveloping form conveys a sense of protection without isolating the user from their surroundings. The result is a place that supports concentration, short breaks or confidential conversations — flexible and free from predetermined use. The textile surface contributes to acoustic calm and a softer atmosphere, helping to quieten the space both perceptually and functionally. In this way, se:cove is less a conventional seating object and more a small architectural element that brings structure and a sense of humanity to open office environments.”
With se:cove, sustainability does not begin with isolated material choices, but with a fundamental design principle: how furniture must be constructed to endure over time.
At the core of the concept is a construction designed for disassembly. The chair is engineered so that all components can be separated by material type and replaced at the end of their respective life cycles. A solid beechwood frame provides a robust, renewable foundation, while all additional elements are mechanically fixed—either bolted or tension-mounted—rather than permanently bonded. This approach allows the structural core to remain in use for decades.
The upholstery completely eliminates conventional PUR foam, instead relying on fillings made from 100% recycled PET, combined with membrane layers that ensure comfort and long-term shape retention. The textile cover is likewise designed with longevity in mind: rather than being glued, it is attached using releasable fixings, allowing it to be removed, renewed or replaced with ease.
As Thomas adds: “se:cove demonstrates that a sustainable product does not need to signal its credentials overtly. Its strength lies in a clear, intelligent construction that treats responsibility as an integral part of good design.”
The form of the chair is derived from an intuitive gesture of protection—soft, embracing and yet clearly articulated. “The open, rounded base geometry creates an object that stands confidently on its own, without ever demanding attention,” Thomas explains. “The textile surface defines its character, lending warmth and calm, while allowing the piece to integrate effortlessly into a wide range of architectural contexts. Here, design and construction are inseparable: sustainable material choices and precise ease of dismantling form the structural core and, at the same time, shape the aesthetic identity of the product.”
se:cove is available with a four-leg base in either wood or aluminium. The three upholstery elements—seat cushion, inner backrest cushion and outer backrest cushion—can be configured independently and selected freely from the Sedus upholstery collection. A continuous decorative seam, also featured on the rectangular accent cushions, adds a distinctive and refined finishing touch. 03.02.2026
