Start it @KBC – How open innovation spaces can remain conducive to focused work

A coworking space balancing energy and focus

The new Start it @KBC site, completed in 2021 and designed by Space Refinery, spans 1,300 m² and was conceived as an open, vibrant working environment for start-ups. The aim was to create a space that functions both as a social hub and as a retreat for focused work.

The challenge: in the previous open-plan space, noise – caused by meetings, video calls and a lack of acoustic separation – led to significant concentration problems. The solution is a well-thought-out spatial concept that does not restrict openness, but structures it.

Zoning as the key to success

The office functions as a flexible ecosystem in which different working modes are clearly separated from one another, yet remain interconnected. A ring-shaped corridor connects all areas, providing orientation and creating seamless transitions.

  • Active zones such as the cafeteria encourage interaction and a sense of community
  • Quiet areas offer dedicated retreats for focused work

This clear zoning reduces disturbances – without losing the openness of the overall space.

Biophilic design: the ‘urban jungle’

A central design element is the consistent focus on nature. The concept of an ‘urban jungle’ runs through the entire space:

  • Plants as functional and atmospheric elements
  • Natural materials such as wood
  • Warm lighting and earthy colour tones
  • Playful details such as wallpaper with animal motifs

This biophilic approach helps reduce stress and aids concentration – a crucial factor in open-plan working environments.

The Library: concentration with clear rules

The heart of focused working is the Library. It is open to all, but follows clear, albeit unspoken, rules:

  • no phone calls
  • no distractions
  • focus on quiet, individual activities

A large wooden table and semi-enclosed booths create an atmosphere that not only facilitates concentration but actively supports it. The Library thus becomes a deliberately designed retreat within the open-plan system.

The Forest Lounge: Focus in a relaxed atmosphere

Directly adjacent, the Forest Lounge expands the range of quiet workspaces. With soft seating and a homely design, it offers an alternative environment for:

  • deep thinking
  • informal work
  • creative reflection

It complements the functional rigour of the Library with a more emotional, relaxed dimension – without losing sight of the need for focus.

Scope for creativity and culture

Alongside the clearly structured work zones, the project also incorporates playful elements such as swings, modular structures and illuminated displays. These encourage movement, interaction and a vibrant coworking culture – without compromising the quiet areas.

Conclusion: Openness needs structure

Start it @KBC impressively demonstrates that open coworking spaces need not be at odds with focused work. The key factors are:

  • clear functional zoning
  • deliberately designed quiet zones
  • the targeted use of biophilic design

The Library and Forest Lounge are more than just rooms – they are essential building blocks of a working environment that facilitates both collective energy and individual concentration.

This approach is therefore not only relevant for coworking, but can serve as a fundamental model for modern working environments.
