bluebird.space – A work café as the community’s anchor point

Combining smart infrastructure, inspiring spaces and thoughtfully designed areas, bluebird.space in the Panzerhalle Business Park in Salzburg offers a premium co-working experience. Since opening in 2020, the vibrant community that shapes the workspace has grown to more than 70 users.

In 2025, the space underwent a comprehensive redesign. The objective was to further develop the concept of bluebird.space as a “Great Good Place to Work” and align the co-working space even more closely with the needs of its community. The focus was on using existing areas more efficiently while creating new impulses for interaction and collaboration. Helene and Markus Stainer, founders of bluebird.space, told us.

With Sedus, we gained fresh inspiration and were motivated to rethink scenarios and support our users even more effectively.

Activity Based Working as the guiding principle

The new spatial concept follows the principles of Activity Based Working more consistently. Areas are used more efficiently, underutilised zones have been redefined, and versatile work and meeting areas further developed. A colour concept created in collaboration with the Sedus Workspace Design Team supports this structure and makes the different usage scenarios tangible – from retreat and focus to interaction and collaboration.

The furnishings were consistently aligned with the respective usage scenarios:

Agile working & collaboration

Versatile settings were created to support agile working and spontaneous collaboration. se:spot design chairs and mobile se:lab flip stackable tables form flexible areas for workshops, brief meetings and collaborative formats that can be quickly and easily adapted to the changing requirements of a co-working space.

Meeting & seminar rooms

The meeting and seminar rooms provide a clearly structured setting for meetings, presentations and training sessions. Equipped with comfortable se:mission conference swivel chairs, they support both collaborative work and presentations while harmoniously integrating into the zoned overall concept. They complement the open areas with structured, focused work settings.

Quiet zones & retreats

Dedicated quiet areas were designed for focused work and individual retreat. As a textile retreat, se:hive, combined with ergonomic se:flex swivel chairs, offers varying degrees of privacy and supports concentrated work in the co-working environment. In smaller niches, se:lab high desk workshop tables or inviting se:lounge armchairs create space for focus or relaxation – depending on individual needs. This results in a differentiated offering that supports both introverted and communicative work styles.

Canteen, bistro & cafeteria

A central element of the new spatial concept is the Work Café, which serves as the social hub of the co-working space. Furnished with se:works lounge furniture, se:café soft chairs and se:assist diner tables, it is used equally as a workspace, meeting point and place for exchange. Individual se:café soft chair and se:café high bench configurations, as well as colourful se:dot stools, add to the relaxed atmosphere. The lounge area with se:living armchairs and side tables creates an inviting setting for residents and guests alike. The Work Café thus functions not only as a complement, but as a connecting element between the different zones – and plays a key role in shaping the identity of the space.

Partnership-based collaboration and sustainable impact

When selecting the furnishings, the couple placed particular emphasis on flexibility, quality and user comfort. The furniture needed to support different use cases and enable both focused work and spontaneous collaboration. Equally important was the long-term adaptability of the concept.

The collaboration with Sedus was based on partnership and equality. The Workspace Design Team supported the project with detailed planning drawings, colour concepts and professional expertise, bringing fresh perspectives into the existing space. A particular challenge lay in preserving established areas while creating new possibilities of use. Flexible furnishing solutions enabled underutilised zones to be meaningfully transformed.

Feedback from users on the new working environment has been extremely positive. The newly designed Work Café in particular is now used far more intensively and has become the central heart of work, interaction and community.

The project demonstrates how existing co-working structures can be sustainably developed through targeted analysis, flexible furnishing and a clear usage concept – making their distinct identity even more visible.
