The four Work Café archetypes and their moods

The four Work Café archetypes and their moods

The key to successfully designing a work café is to create a space that is noticeably different from both the traditional office and the home office. At the same time, a good work café should offer a variety of environments - from public areas for spontaneous interactions to private corners for concentrated work or confidential conversations.

The variety of atmospheres that work cafés provide allows employees to choose the environment that best suits their current task or mood. It also contributes to a significant increase in employee engagement.

Atmosphere with a concept - Hub, Club, Library & Garden

When analysing new workspaces, four main archetypes of work cafés were identified: the Hub, the Club, the Library and the Garden. Each of them is characterised by unique features and a distinctive atmosphere. This allows the archetype that best suits the specific work requirements and corporate cultures to be selected:

The Hub

As an unconventional co-working-style space, the ‘Hub’ is designed for collaborative interaction. It is characterised by a lively, social feel, with the space design specifically encouraging social interactions and connections. Dedicated areas for public events and community activities encourage interaction and collaboration.

The Club

The ‘Club’ work café archetype is equipped with comfortable and cosy facilities and presents itself as an elegant lounge. It is designed to ensure privacy and offers retreats and quiet places in a shared space. With a variety of different furniture types, both informal and formal working configurations can be created.

The Library

The ‘Library’ creates a calm and contemplative communal space with several individual environments. It encourages concentrated work and minimises interaction. The regular layout with often parallel or linear room arrangements and the restrained atmosphere further characterise the mood.

The Garden

As a natural landscape with green spaces, the ‘garden’-style work café serves as a quiet retreat or place of discovery. Inspired by biophilic principles, it offers a variety of work configurations that adapt to different needs. The interior design has an organic feel and is often conceived as a landscape that invites exploration.

Variety with impact - the right setting for every situation

The four work café archetypes - Hub, Club, Library and Garden - illustrate how differently work cafés can be designed. Each type stands for a specific atmosphere and specifically addresses individual needs and different working styles. Whether communication, retreat, concentration or creative development – the conscious choice and combination of these archetypes makes it possible to create work cafés that are more than just places for coffee and conversation: they become lively, inspiring meeting spaces that promote well-being and productivity in equal measure. Companies that make targeted use of this diversity not only create attractive working environments, but also strengthen their culture, promote togetherness - and thus set new standards for modern working.
