Efficient working environments, timeless character: the headquarters of M+R Spedag Group AG

The complete refurbishment of an existing building offers a valuable opportunity to rethink the working environment. It is not only about making the space more functional and contemporary, but also about aligning it more strategically with the organisation, its processes and its staff. This was precisely the challenge faced by the M+R Spedag Group AG when they redesigned their headquarters in Muttenz. The goal was to create a modern yet timeless working environment across1,100 square metres, supporting structure, efficiency and collaboration whilst providing around 100 employees with optimum conditions for their everyday working life. A close collaboration between Vögtli Büro Design AG and Sedus resulted in a holistic furnishing concept that successfully combines aesthetics, ergonomics, and efficiency.

A modern working environment in an existing building

M+R Spedag Group AG is an internationally active transport and logistics company with clear requirements in terms of structure, efficiency and reliability – values that they also wanted to reflect in the new working environment. Within the context of an existing building, this meant reinterpreting established structures while preserving the character of the site. As part of the complete refurbishment of the existing building, Vögtli Büro Design AG took on the planning and implementation of the office furnishings across two floors.

From the initial concept phase to final completion, the collaboration was closely coordinated with the company’s CEO and HR department. As a result, it was possible to develop an office structure that meets the functional requirements of a logistics company as well as the ergonomic and design expectations of a modern workplace.

Functional workspaces with a clear structure

A defining feature of the spatial concept is the zoned carpet design. It provides visual structure to the different areas, helping visitors find their way around more easily, while also improving acoustics. This actively supports orientation within the space – a key factor in any company with clearly defined processes and workflow. The colour scheme reflects the client’s preferences and supports the timeless character of the working environment. The furnishings were carefully tailored to the specific usage requirements of each area.

Team workstation

The team workstations are furnished with se:flex swivel chairs and se:lab e-desk workstations, which have electric height adjustment to support ergonomic working and movement throughout the day. These are complemented by functional container solutions and grand slam storage units, which create order and bring a clear structure to the work surfaces. The result is a calm, efficient workspace that supports focused working and at the same time meets ergonomic standards.

Agile working & collaboration

Areas for agile working were created to support informal check-ins and creative collaboration. mastermind tables in combination with se:spot bar stools offer flexible usage potential for short meetings, spontaneous discussions or project work in a team. The open design promotes communication and supports a vibrant work culture. These zones complement the classic workstations and encourage quick check-ins without a formal meeting structure.

Quiet zones & retreats

Various quiet and retreat areas are available for focused work, confidential conversations, or short moments of down-time. se:works lounge furniture, along with se:cube room-in-room solutions and turn around swivel chairs, allow employees to work with concentration away from the open-plan office. These elements support an even balance between dialogue and concentration. In doing so, the concept deliberately addresses varying tasks and individual work requirements.

Hubs & intermediate areas

At key hubs and in transitional areas, se:lounge lounge furniture and se:tea side tables invite people to take a quick break. These zones encourage informal interaction between employees and serve as communicative meeting points in everyday work. In doing so, they strengthen internal networking and encourage dialogue across teams.

Canteen, bistro & cafeteria

AThe shared spaces were also consistently integrated into the overall concept. In the cafeteria, mastermind tables and se:spot seating have been used. The furniture supports breaks as well as informal conversations, strengthening social cohesion within the company. This transforms the cafeteria into an integral part of the working environment – rather than simply a functional side room.

A coherent overall concept achieved under challenging conditions

One particular challenge of the project was the layout of the existing building: small lifts and narrow staircases required precise logistical planning. In addition, all furniture had to be delivered and installed within just five days. Thanks to the close coordination of all stakeholders, this task was executed efficiently and without complications. Delivering the project successfully under these conditions underscores the importance of proactive planning and close cooperation between all parties.

The decision in favour of Sedus was an easy one for M+R Spedag Group AG, thanks to the coherent overall design and the compelling priceperformance ratio. Another decisive factor was the ability to combine functional requirements, design, and costeffectiveness into a coherent overall concept. The furniture integrates seamlessly into the design concept and ensures that the spaces will be used effectively over the long term.

An outcome that reinforces collaboration and organisational identity

Thanks to the redesign of its headquarters in Muttenz, M+R Spedag Group AG now benefits from a modern, timeless working environment that combines functional clarity with an inviting atmosphere. The spaces foster team spirit, communication and focused work in equal measure, providing employees with optimum conditions for their working day. This project illustrates how existing buildings can be sustainably developed by implementing a clearly structured, useroriented design and furnishing concept.
