A logical next step: from idea to intuitive solution
The original impetus for developing a touch display quickly became clear: although the existing control system for the se:cube, via wireless buttons, was functional, it left potential untapped.
"We wanted to create a new, intuitive solution for the se:cube – a control system that requires no explanation and responds in real time," explains Nike Alberts. "Touch displays are now widely available on the market. For us, it was exactly the right time."
The goal: a contemporary, direct and user-friendly control system for lighting, colour temperature and ventilation – in keeping with the high-quality design of the se:cube room-in-room solutions.

Design with feeling: how the interface was created
In its search for a suitable UI/UX specialist, the team deliberately opted for external expertise. The path to this was structured and collaborative – with several interdependent steps that brought together different perspectives.
"In the end, we opted for a combination of several approaches," says Nike Alberts. "It was important to us that the interface was easy to understand, with self-explanatory icons – and that it took away the user's fear of contact."
One deliberately chosen detail: even before the actual interface appears, a friendly "Hello" greets the user. "Interfaces can quickly seem daunting. This little welcome moment ensures a positive first impression."

Special attention was also paid to the time display, which serves as a screensaver during meetings so that participants can always keep an eye on the time remaining.
A feel-good atmosphere at the touch of a button
The touch display controls not only the light intensity, but also the colour temperature and ventilation – a combination that has a direct influence on wellbeing and performance.
"Cool light makes many people feel uncomfortable – it quickly brings to mind a dentist's practice," says Nike Alberts. "From feedback on previous cubes, we knew that colour temperature control was a real added value."
Added to this is individually adjustable ventilation. Here, too, people react very differently to air movement. "People who feel comfortable stay focused longer. An individually adjustable environment creates a better working atmosphere."
This is supported by "Human Centric Lighting", whose stored light curve follows the colour temperature of natural light outside. This supports the natural biorhythm, counteracts fatigue and activates the user.
Individual presets – easily transferable
Companies can define individual presets for lighting and ventilation for se:cube. "These settings can be quickly and easily transferred from one cube to another via USB-C stick," explains Nike Alberts. "This makes handling particularly efficient, especially for companies with multiple se:cubes."
Less maintenance, more reliability
The new touch display also scores highly in terms of maintenance and energy efficiency. An integrated sleep mode reduces energy consumption. "We don't need batteries – that means no hazardous waste and less maintenance," says Nike Alberts.
Another advantage: the touch display can be easily integrated into existing se:cube models. The retrofit kit is available for 2nd generation se:cube (from 01/2023) and also for se:cube max.

se:cube in the context of New Work
se:cube is becoming increasingly important, particularly in the wake of the New Work trend. More and more people are returning to the office to meet, communicate and work together with other colleagues. Nevertheless, there is still a need for places where people can concentrate alone for short periods – for example, between two meetings – or where teams can retreat for meetings without disturbing others.
"There are fewer traditional retreat areas, but at the same time, demand is increasing," says Nike Alberts. "A closed cube helps to organise thoughts, work undisturbed or hold meetings without disturbing others."
The se:cube max also creates protected spaces for workshops or discussions. Another unique feature is the consistent design language of Sedus office solutions.
"From individual telephone booths to 4×4 metre solutions – the same materials can be used for the cubes as for Sedus storage furniture, screens and tables, giving the office a clear uniform look."

Conclusion: touch is part of today's working world
For Nike Alberts, one thing is clear: the new touch display is not an extra, but a logical part of modern working environments.
"Today, we can no longer do without touching and swiping. The touch display enables intuitive, comfortable working. A requirement that fits perfectly with se:cube – and consistently continues the room-in-room concept."
