Why fire protection is so important for furniture
Many fire safety concepts explicitly take furniture into account – especially in heavily frequented or publicly accessible rooms. It is not enough for individual materials such as upholstery fabrics or foams to be classified as "flame retardant" (B1). Upholstered furniture consists of complex material composites that behave differently in a fire than individual materials.
Special standards and test procedures therefore apply to upholstered and contract furniture, such as EN 1021-1/-2 (cigarette and match test) and DIN 66084 with its classifications P-c (low), P-b (medium) and P-a (high). Depending on the project, use and country, additional requirements may apply and must be taken into account.
Sedus relies on tested safety
Sedus upholstered furniture is made exclusively from materials that meet minimum fire safety requirements – as standard, the cigarette test in accordance with EN 1021-1 and classification DIN 66084 P-c. Textiles that have been treated with fire retardants are deliberately avoided. Instead, Sedus uses fibres that are naturally flame-retardant, such as wool or Trevira CS, which also comply with the Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
Some of the cover fabrics used, such as leather, wool fabrics or fabrics made from Trevira CS, already achieve the higher classification P-b (medium) without flame-retardant foam and also pass the match test (EN 1021-2). For the most demanding requirements, combinations with flame-retardant upholstery foams are available that even meet the British standard BS 5852 (Crib 5).
Selected fire-retardant fabrics from the Sedus collection
Presented below are a few selected fabrics from the Sedus collection that meet various fire protection requirements:
One
One is a knitted fabric made from 100% recycled polyester obtained from so-called ‘bottle flakes’ (shredded PET bottles). It is breathable, durable, GRS-certified and meets several fire protection standards. The fabric is dyed in one piece and gives offices a very fresh look.

Umber
The natural wool fabric Umber stands out for its warm, homely character. Crafted from 85% New Zealand wool, it meets all relevant fire safety standards while showcasing a timeless linen design and classic plain weave.

Nobel
Made from 100% New Zealand wool, Nobel has an elegant, voluminous texture. This durable fabric meets all important fire safety requirements and stands out with its sophisticated design, where both thick and thin yarns are woven together.

Step
The Step upholstery fabric is made from 100% Trevira CS and is a real eye-catcher thanks to its pixelated structure. It is ideal for work and public areas with strict fire safety and security regulations – visually modern and technically safe.

Fame
The elastic, soft Fame fabric made from 95% wool also meets all current fire safety standards. Thanks to its fine combed wool, it scores highly with its excellent upholstery properties.

Advice for complex requirements
Fire safety requirements can vary depending on the type of building, its use and regional regulations. Sedus therefore recommends consulting the relevant authorities if in doubt.
